KAMLOOPS — Mike Ellis and his family are heading out on the South Thompson River to enjoy the afternoon.
“Today we’re going to enjoy the sunshine, take a run on the water. We’re actually just going to go upstream as far as we’re allowed to go and drop our anchor and just gradually float down,” said Ellis.
They have food, water, and most importantly life jackets. Ellis tries to ensure he’s prepared with everything he needs on board, and once he’s on the water he’s aware at all times.
“Look behind you, check all over the place constantly,” he noted. “You want to make sure you have the proper equipment with you on board all the time. Periodically check what’s going on with your boat.”
RCMP advises people apply the same rules of the road to the water.
“They’re motorized vehicles on the water that can be very dangerous,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie from the Kamloops RCMP. “So the same types of precautions you take when you’re driving a motor vehicle have to be adhered to on the water in that you need to give a safe distance to all types of vehicles.”
It’s the kind of advice ICBC and the RCMP were giving boaters on Tuesday at the Pioneer Park Boat Launch. The focus was also on impaired driving, both on the road and in the water.
“Our message is pretty simple. If you plan on having a drink, make sure you plan a safe ride home. That also applies to if you’re out boating for the day,” said ICBC road safety and community co-ordinator Ingrid Brakop. “You have a designated driver for that boat and that individual is responsible essentially for his or her crew for the day.”
ICBC says enjoy yourself during these summer months, but also be smart about it.
“People are on vacation and they’re boating and you like to have a few beer, [but] there are regulations around that, so again if you’re planning on going boating, make sure you know what the regulations are and acquaint yourself with those.”
Ellis loves to go on the water, but he also likes to do it responsibly, and that means no drinking.
“If you’re drinking on the water, you’re going to hop in your vehicle and drive right after, so just don’t do it. There’s no reason for it. I understand guys want a good time, but drinking is not always a good time.”
