Kamloops hosts picnic for city’s seniors in Riverside Park

The event is put on by the city, in conjunction with a pair of seniors homes in Kamloops, and is meant to give those who attend a chance to spend time with old friends, as well as possibly meet some new ones.

“I think it’s great,” first-timer Fred Markortoff said. “Everything – mostly [the] people.”

For Martina Kennedy, who was also attending her first Seniors Picnic, the social aspect of the event was the best part.

“Socializing and perhaps meeting new people; that’s always fun,” Kennedy said.

The event is free for seniors to attend, and includes lunch – a beverage, some chips, and BBQ’d hot dog, courtesy of the Paddlewheeler’s Lions Club – served up some local Girls Guides.

Lauren Schneider said her favourite part is the reaction of the seniors: “Probably seeing how happy they are,” she told CFJC Today.

“It’s nice to come together and have everyone come together as a community,” Arianna Loughton said.

While many of the seniors are still independent and live active lives, for some that’s not always an option, which is why it’s nice to have an event meant to bring seniors from across the city together to enjoy each others company, some lunch, and a day in the park.

“We focus on keeping them engaged, healthy living,” Evans said. “We want to bring these people down to the park and it’s just a really fun event for them.”
