VERNON — A Vernon couple got a scare this morning after a truck hit their house.

It happened on 30th Avenue at 25th Street, when a delivery truck was going up the steep road known as Suicide Hill.

Resident Lucille Slonski says she heard a loud crash and looked out to see a truck in her yard.

“This truck outfit was going up Suicide Hill, and couldn’t make it, so he was either rolling back down, but instead of straight, I don’t know….He ended up going down over the bank, beyond the power pole, and landed up against the house, and the wall and fence,” Slonski says.

Slonski and her husband were both in the home at the time, but were not hurt.

“I heard a loud crash, and then I looked out the window and saw smoke, and half of the concrete wall down, and the corner of the load dumped down on our patio area.”

Police are on the scene, talking to the truck driver, with no official word yet on what caused it.

Guy Heer lives across the street, and was concerned about Mrs. Slonski’s well being, when he heard the commotion.

“A lot of people walk this hill, a lot of people. And there’s a kindergarten up here and they walk the kids down to the library. We’re just fortunate there was no people walking. My concern was her (Lucille) because she is always out here (on the boulevard where there are flowers),” says Heer.

Slonski says she called police after the incident, and says the driver didn’t say much.

“He was probably in shock. All I could see is he was kneeling down and holding his head.”
