KAMLOOPS — What a difference a week makes when it comes to the wildfire situation in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Last week, thousands of lightning strikes were responsible for dozens of fire starts — including a strike that sparked a fire perilously close to homes in Batchelor Heights.

However, things got off to a much better start last night with rain and have continued with cooler temperatures today.

“Currently, we have 17 active wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre and we have responded to 105 since April 1,” says Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall. “And the weather has definitely helped as we can see on our fire danger rating there’s a lot of low and very low within the Kamloops Fire Centre which is great.”
