Police nab Kamloops motorist yapping on cellphone twice in 13 minutes

KAMLOOPS — Nearly 100 Kamloops motorists were charged in yet another recent traffic blitz — including one driver who received two distracted driving tickets 13 minutes apart.

The blitz took place last Friday (June 8) at two different locations in town and nabbed one man who was caught again just 13 minutes after his first ticket, says Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.

“He received a cellphone ticket just as he was crossing the Overlanders Bridge and then again a few blocks later by another police officer. It was a male driver in his mid-20s.”

Shelkie says the incident follows another blitz in March when another motorist received two distracted driving tickets 45 minutes apart.

But cellphone citations weren’t the only violations. Here’s the complete breakdown:

• Using electronic devices: 23
• Fail to wear a seat belt: 17
• Miscellaneous tickets and warnings: 55
• Unsafe vehicles removed from the road: 6

Another blitz that took place from May 23 to 25 involving police and the Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement targeting unsafe light commercial vehicles (vehicles that may not normally go through the scales) yielded even more infractions.

Over the three-day period, 380 tickets were issued and another 48 vehicle inspections were ordered for unsafe vehicles.
