KAMLOOPS — 40 Students from 10 different schools throughout School District 73 showed off their science skills at Thompson Rivers University today.

Elementary school kids from grade 2 to grade 7 competed in Kamloops’ first Robotics competition. Students used several different types of robots to work together, problem solve and understand how things work.

“We’ve got two different robots that are currently in action doing a maze challenge, so they’re programmed in different ways one uses block coding with the computer program, and the other one is pushing in directions on top of the robot,” says Elizabeth deVries,  District Technology Coordinator. “Students are asked to go through the maze and in some of the challenges they have to have the robot pick something up and move some blocks in the different landscape that they’re facing, so it’s been neat.”

Robotics is a new area of learning and as technology advances, the school district is giving students some real-world engineering experience.

“Students here have a chance to come up with an idea, try and accomplish a problem solution, and see their ideas come out in a way that’s really hands on, watch the robot move and see if their ideas were right or wrong, so they have a really neat chance to look critically at their decision making,” says deVries.
