KAMLOOPS — This year’s flood season seems to be winding down in Kamloops.
Dave Campbell, head of the River Forecast Centre, said during a teleconference Monday he has lifted the high streamflow advisory for the North Thompson and said the high streamflow advisory for the South Thompson will likely be lifted later this week.
“We’re expecting that through this week we’re going to be experiencing a broad peak on the South Thompson River and Shuswap Lake,” he said. “So, we’re pretty much there now; we’re at the peak and we anticipate we’ll be pulling those down in the coming days.”
He attributed the good news to this spring’s “accelerated melt of the snow.”
“We’re seeing now in the order of 40 per cent to 100 per cent of the snowpack that we started the season with is now melted. And in many of the sites where we saw extremely high snowpacks, they’ve declined to below normal for this time of year.”
Campbell said the accelerated melt was due to the “ongoing extreme hot temperatures the last month plus.”
