Thompson Rivers expected to rise further this weekend

KAMLOOPS — Weather will be the key driver when it comes to the flood threat in Kamloops the next week or two.

Dave Campbell, head of the River Forecast Centre, said he expects “the North and South Thompson Rivers to rise an additional 30 centimetres through this weekend,” but noted that’s still a half-metre below 2012 levels.”

“Projections based on the snow, we expect to see the peak in the next week or two unless we get significant rain.”

In the meantime, high streamflow advisories remain in effect for both rivers.

The City of Kamloops has reacted to the forecast by closing all city-run boat launches effective 10:00 p.m. tonight. It has also taken other measures including closing the pier at Riverside Park and shuttering the Rivers Trail between Riverside Park and Pioneer Park.

The city has also encouraged residents in low-lying areas to protect their properties by placing sandbags around their homes. Sandbags are available at fire stations throughout the city.

Elsewhere in B.C., Campbell said most of his concern lies in the Kootenays, including the Slocan River, where a flood watch has been issued.

Emergency Management BC Executive Director Chris Duffy joined the bi-weekly teleconference to say the number of evacuation orders has dropped to 37 affecting 341 properties, which he noted is “down substantially.”
