Kamloops blood drive to honour victims of Humboldt Broncos tragedy

KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops man is doing what he can to ensure something good comes out of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash tragedy.

Stu Middleton is co-founder of Hockey Gives Blood, an organization that partners with Canadian Blood Services to promote blood donation as an integral component of hockey programs.

Tonight, the group is hosting a blood drive and awareness event at the Calvary Community Church on Rogers Way from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

“We’re inviting the entire community to come see what we’re about and to see what Hockey Gives Blood is doing for local communities all across the country.”

Though all spots are filled for donating blood tonight, he hopes people will still come out and learn how important it is to give blood.

“This year alone, Canadian Blood Services will need 100,000 new blood donors and we feel that those 17 years old and up could help with that.”

Middleton says he was inspired to help make a difference following the tragic death of his father who died while travelling to one of his hockey games in Revelstoke almost 20 years ago.

“Our organization was formed after my dad was killed. I felt then, and still do today, that no difference was made after he died,” he says. “When the Broncos tragedy happened I felt helpless and by donating blood, I hope I can help and make a difference.”
