Kamloops ‘a tale of two cities’ when it comes to gas prices

May 18, 2018 | 10:55 AM

KAMLOOPS — Unless you can fill up for a $1.384 a litre today, Gas Buddy Senior Petroleum Analyst Dan McTeague suggest Kamloopsians wait until the weekend to get their gas.

“It’s a tale of two cities. You’ve got some at $1.38 and some at $1.45 and they seem to be duking it out, most of them trying not to lose too much market share to the big box stores like Costco.”

He says if motorists can wait, the “$1.45 stations” will come back to $1.38 by Saturday night or Sunday.

“This is really retail shenanigans, this going up and down like a yo-yo. Generally most stations are able to do quite well at $1.38.”

McTeague notes there may be even more relief on the horizon next week with one of the three refineries that’s still out in Edmonton perhaps coming back online.

“That could mean a drop of three cents a litre for most gas stations. They’ll find their wholesale prices have dropped. So, that $1.38 could be $1.35 by mid-week. That’s barring any meteorological event or geopolitcal event that I can’t see happening. But prices are about as high as they can go.”
