Tax filing deadline looms

KAMLOOPS — Time is running out to file your income taxes.

Canada Revenue Agency spokesperson Fiona He says the deadline to file is midnight tonight with one exception; the deadline for those who are self-employed is June 15.

What happens if you don’t file on time?

“If you owe income tax and you do not file on time then there’s a late filing penalty and that is five per cent of your balance owing plus one per cent per month to a maximum of 12 months.”

She says there are a variety of ways to file your taxes, but says the fastest and most convenient way is online by clicking here.

He says the average tax refund so far this season is $1,650 and notes there are other incentives to filing as well.

“You do not have to file if you do not owe income tax. However, we do recommend you to file because then you can get your benefits, such as child tax benefit, GST, Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security and those such benefits.”

She says you can pay your balance owing through your online banking account, by cheque, by paying at Canada Post or through their website.
