Green Living Expo gives Kamloops new ideas for sustainability

KAMLOOPS — Sustainability is a hot topic for many people these days. Whether it’s reducing the number of single-use plastics people use, installing solar panels on their homes to reduce their power consumption, or buying electric vehicles and to reduce the fossil fuels they’re using, people across Canada are looking at different way to limit their footprint on the environment. Saturday’s Green Living Expo, hosted by the City of Kamloops, was billed as a way for people to find new ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

It’s proving to be a popular event in the city. The 3rd annual Green Living Expo took over the Sandman Centre on Saturday, offering thousands of residents solutions to living more sustainably.

“I think that people are always looking for new ideas to build on what they’re doing already,” City of Kamloops Sustainability Educator Jaimi Garbutt says.

Many residents who attended the event already make an effort to reduce their impact on the environment, but the event is an opportunity for many to learn new ways of living green.

“I would probably be more considerate or mindful of those items that I use to… drink out of, to eat out of,” said one resident attending the event.

With the event not even in officially in the books, Garbutt says the Sustainability Services team was already looking ahead to next year, to make next year’s Green Living Expo bigger and better.

“We’ve already been throwing out some ideas… we haven’t even debriefed yet. We’re still trying to enjoy the event, but we’re already starting to brainstorm as the event is going on.”
