City of Kamloops responds to sewage spill in Dallas

KAMLOOPS — Update: The City of Kamloops confirms it has been in contact with the property owner in Dallas regarding the sewage spill identified Friday. It says the owner is narrowing the source of the on-site private cross connection that caused the sewer spill.

In the meantime the city has installed a plug and temporary bypass pump to stop the flow into the river. The city will monitor the situation until the source is identified and the situation is resolved.

Earlier: An undetermined amount of sewage has spilled in Dallas.

The City of Kamloops has confirmed early this morning that a cross-connection between a sewer service and a storm main at a private development on the corner of Dallas Drive resulted in a sewage spill into the South Thompson River at the end of Vanstone Road.

Utility Services Manager Greg Wightman says the city has taken immediate action to stop the flow of sewage into the river to protect the environment and to provide the developer time to investigate the cause.

He adds there’s been no impact to the city’s drinking water.

“Our water treatment plant is capable of filtering out any of these sorts of contaminants and we do regular testing and sampling throughout our system year-round and we’ve had absolutely no indication that there’s any concern whatsoever with the drinking water. So, the plant’s doing its job.”

Wightman notes there should be no impact to utility use throughout the city.

He says the spill has been reported to Emergency Management BC.
