KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is expanding one of its outdoor programs in a bid to help foster a better sense of stewardship among its residents.

Its Adopt a Road program has been expanded to allow people to Adopt a Trail.

“We are so excited this year to be adding the Adopt a Trail program,” says Kirsten Wourms, crew leader of the city’s Natural Resources Department. “So, basically residents are encouraged to choose either a road in town or a trail in town and then look after it throughout the year.”

She says those interested in participating should head to their website, kamloops.ca, where they can choose a trail, set up a site meeting, and look at the things they’ll be doing on the trail.

Wourms says invasive weeds will be the main target.

“We’ll get those pulled. If there’s something that we see, maybe a danger tree or a trail, let us know, our parks crew will go out and work on it. And it’s great because people get to take ownership of their trail.”

She says the main target areas are Kenna Cartwright Park as well as trails in the Dallas/Barnhartvale Nature Park.

Wourms asks that people check on the trail “once, twice, or maybe three times a year,” and notes the city will provide high visibility vests and garbage bags to all that take part.
