RIH staff assessing filing system after recent data breach

KAMLOOPS — Royal Inland Hospital says it’s reviewing how it files medical records following a case of 35 patient files going missing last month.

The hospitals health services manager Kris Kristjanson says while all but four have been recovered, this incident has been a wake-up call.

“We’re continuing to search all of our files and records, both in our ambulatory unit and in the health records department. We are reviewing our filing system that we’re using with all the people who do the filing to ensure this type of incident doesn’t happen again,” said Kristjanson.

The 35 files were reported missing on March 9, and RIH staff sent letters to each of the patients who information disappeared to inform them of the breach.

Last week, Kristjanson says 31 of the records were located. The hospital continues to look from within to locate them.

“We are continuing to look for them because we have found the 31 that had been missing. We do believe they are here on site with us. We can’t confirm that until we find them.”
