Paul Lake golf tournament to raise money for emergency equipment

“Last year we raised money and got some fire equipment. We still need fire equipment but we feel there’s a lot of us getting up there in years and these AED’s are in all public facilities so it’s a good thing to have in our trailer.”

Lund says fundraisers like these are essential now that they no longer run what used to be known as the community volunteer fire department.

“We can’t be called anything that says fire in it because of liability issues. So, basically we have an emergency response trailer that happens to have fire equipment in it and we’re just a good neighbour helping a good neighobur now.”

He says a few years ago they were just months from putting shovels in the ground to build a new fire hall when B.C.’s Fire Commissioner changed the rules.

“We had a budget of $25,000 a year for the community but with the B.C. Fire Commissioner’s new playbook it changed to $125,000 a year and so when you’ve only got 143 homes, that’s pretty expensive to try and raise. People just couldn’t afford it.”

Despite the change he says community members weren’t about to sit still.

“We have a great community, everybody looks out for everybody else and comes to each other’s aid to put fires out.”

Lund says anyone interested in participating in this Saturday’s tournament is welcome to join. Registration is on site and costs $20. They hope to raise from $1,500 to $2,000.
