Top cop brings new leadership to Kamloops detachment

KAMLOOPS — The incoming officer in charge (OIC) of the Kamloops RCMP can’t wait to get started.

On Wednesday it was announced Insp. Syd Lecky was hired for the job and will take the place of the departing Supt. Brad Mueller.

“I’m very excited with the news. It’s a good fit. Kamloops is a great community, a great location,” said Insp. Lecky. “I’ve spent a lot of time travelling throughout the province in different posts and Kamloops is certainly a key, vibrant community. It’s a great fit for my family with the age of my children and so on. My wife is excited.”

He’s also looking forward to working with what he calls a “supportive environment with (city) council and certainly city staff as far as working with the RCMP” is concerned.

“And great staff within the detachment – members and municipal employees, public service employees. Everyone, a great team. So, for me, it’s a great opportunity.”

Insp. Lecky comes to Kamloops from Terrace where he’s been the detachment commander the past two years. Prior to that he’s made stops all over B.C. including Gold River, Mackenzie, and Prince George.

He’s hails from New Brunswick and is “a proud member” of the Passamaquoddy Nation. Insp. Lecky isn’t sure if he’s the first ever OIC of First Nations descent in Kamloops but admits it feels special nevertheless.

“It’s pretty cool for me to be honest with you,” said Insp. Lecky. “I’m looking forward to that but really I’m there to serve all citizens of Kamloops and that has little bearing on it but it’s certainly a proud moment for me to be able to come and worth with the First Nations communities as a First Nations person.”

So, what does he think he brings to the position?

“I have a fairly wide breadth of experience. I know I don’t know everything but I’m eager to learn and willing to listen. So, if you combine that I think that usually gives you many of the tools you need to get the job done.”

Insp. Lecky said his official start date hasn’t been confirmed yet noting it’s dependent on the sale of his home and the purchase of a new one in Kamloops but adds “he hopes to be here by summer.”
