Logan Lake residents shocked by murder at local motel

KAMLOOPS — The community of Logan Lake, where 2,100 people reside, is in shock after learning of a homicide that happened at the Copper Valley Motel on Tuesday morning.

“I can’t believe it,” said Ron Filipenko. “We’ve virtually had no problems and we’ve been here going on 18 years now. It’s a very safe community and well looked after.”

Logan Lake Mayor Robin Smith said the community has never had a homicide during her 37 years. Her heart goes out to both families involved. 

“It hits home. In a small community like this, you can’t prepare for it,” said Smith. “You don’t know what the impact is going to be because you never expect something like that to happen here. THere are places you expect to live that things like that happen, but not Logan Lake. That’s not us. We’re a small, safe community and that’s why people choose to live here.”

A 55 year old Logan Lake man was killed Tuesday morning. The accused, 66 year old Gordon Fleming, is in custody after a reported stabbing inside the motel. 

“We are able to confirm that 66 year old Gordon Fleming of Logan Lake was arrested at the motel and is now charged with second degree murder in connection with the death of the 55 year old male who was also a resident,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk of the Southeast RCMP District. 

According to police, the incident happened around 6:40 Tuesday morning inside one of the rooms before first responders were notified. 

“On their attendance, they located an unresponsive male in one of the hotel rooms. BC Ambulance and the local fire crews also attended in an effort to provide emergency medical aid. However, they were unable to successfully revive the man, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene,” noted Moskaluk. 

According to a Logan Lake resident who is close to Fleming, he was living at the Copper Valley Motel during the winter and would occassionally travel out of town for work as a millwright. The friend said this incident is uncharacteristic of Fleming. 

Fleming made an appearance in a Kamloops courtroom on Wednesday and will remain in custody as the Major Crimes unit investigates what exactly happened.
