Kamloops council to consider unique Indigenous housing project

KAMLOOPS — Another affordable housing proposal will come before Kamloops council Tuesday.

Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services (LMO) is proposing a 31-unit housing project on city-owned property at the corner of Singh Street and Lethbridge Avenue in Brocklehurst.

The organization says the units will be affordable housing meant for Indigenous youth (aged 16 to 26) and Elders.

Its design and operation will be meant to encourage the traditional practice of exchanging knowledge between Elders and young people.

LMO says the development will be focused on youth who have aged out of care or have accessed services associated with the province’s child welfare program.

If council approves a rezoning application for the project, it will move to the public hearing stage.
