TRU to host panel discussion on opioid crisis

KAMLOOPS — The opioid crisis will the focus of a panel discussion at Thompson Rivers University Monday night.

It will be hosted by fourth year Bachelor of Science and Nursing student Marina Troke, with funding she received through Canada’s 150 Task Force.

“The focus will be on the concept of disenfranchised grief around those who have lost loved ones to this crisis.”

Troke describes disenfranchised grief as “the kind of grief that you can’t express or isn’t recognized as much through society.”

“A lot of people who die from suicide, or from overdose… society doesn’t value the person or relationship, so the grief isn’t validated. I think it’s time to get that heard.”

Troke was inspired to host the event by the death of a close friend, a nurse, who died from a fentanyl overdose in December, 2016.

She says there will be three mothers present tonight who are advocating for recognition that addiction can touch everybody.

Troke says the event starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Irving K. Barber Centre and will include an open mic. She says members of the public are welcome to attend.
