Truck plummets off Highway 1, down embankment near Savona

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Rural RCMP are asking motorists to be cautious going around a crash scene west of Kamloops.

Just after 10:00 a.m. Friday, emergency crews were called to the Trans Canada Highway between Tobiano and Savona for a vehicle that had plummeted 150 feet down an embankment.

S/Sgt. Doug Aird says the two occupants of the pick-up truck were transported to Royal Inland Hospital via air ambulance.

Aird says it appears the injuries were not life-threatening.

Snow has begun to fall, and Aird says that is having an impact on road conditions.

“We have snow sticking. It’s not great right now,” Aird said. “If people are doing under the limit – 70 or 80 (kilometres per hour) – there are no issues, but we have a lot of them pushing it here. A lot of them on the radar this morning doing 100+ still in these bad roads.”

“It’s in a very bad location, too. It looks like they went across the road and then down an embankment. When the original call came in, a motorist had noticed tracks and that’s how they determined a vehicle had gone over.”

Aird says motorists should be extra cautious while passing emergency crews.

“We just want a bit of caution when people are going by this area. The roads are very icy out here this morning, and if they could keep that in mind when they’re going through this area. We have a number of emergency vehicles and ambulances on scene.”
