Oprah Says No Way to Presidential Run

It’s not going to happen. After Oprah Winfrey gave a rousing, wide-ranging speech that touched on social justice at the Golden Globes, celebrities and ordinary people alike have been buzzing over the possibility that she might launch a presidential bid in 2020.

But the 60 Minutes correspondent put the rumors to rest in an interview with 60 Minutes Overtime correspondent Ann Silvio in a clip released Thursday.

  • Winfrey said: “I am actually humbled by the fact that people think that I could be a leader of the free world, but it’s just not in my spirit.”
  • She is speaking to Silvio ahead of her next story on Sunday’s 60 Minutes, which is set to document America’s political divide.
  • “I was just trying to give a good speech,” she says of her Golden Globes moment. “I was looking for a way to express what was going on in this moment in terms of gender and class and race. I cared about landing that speech in the room.”
  • After the speech, she said “wealthy men” started calling her, asking to run her campaign and “raise $1 billion” for it. But she said she just didn’t feel the call to run.
  • “And wouldn’t I know? Because if God actually wanted me to run, wouldn’t God kinda tell me? And I haven’t heard that,” she said.
