KAMLOOPS — It was anything but a relaxing Family Day weekend for volunteers at the Logan Lake Food Bank.
The food bank, located at the mall in town, suffered a serious flood says Head Coordinator Kristina Froment.
“It was Sunday afternoon. I got a phone call saying the roof was caving in and the place was filling up with water and what happened was the sprinkler system in our unit blew apart and flooded the entire place.”
She says the flood destroyed the carpeting, furniture and part of the drywall though most of the food was okay.
“It was quite incredible. Most food was salvaged, like canned food though some dry food such as pasta, dog food and toilet paper was lost.”
In the meantime, Froment says the local government has provided them a temporary location at the old fire hall for the next 30 days until repairs are complete.
“The mayor gave us access so we moved all our food there and we’re going to be operating as best as we can there until we get the place fixed.”
She estimates the food bank, which is run by the local ministry, serves approximately seven per cent of the town’s population which she says works out to roughly 60 to 80 people per month.
Due to the generosity of Home Depot, which had already committed to new flooring and furniture prior to the flood, she says the only help they need is to replace any trim and insulation that got wet.

“Things will be run a bit differently over the next little while. We’ll do the best we can, but for right now we’re going to keep helping people,” Froment says.
