Kamloops administrator wins ‘Outstanding Principals’ award

KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops principal has been honoured with a prestigious national award.

Kent Brewer, principal at Twin Rivers Education Centre (TREC) is just one of four B.C. principals to win Canada’s ‘Outstanding Principals’ award.

Divvied out by The Learning Partnership — a national organization dedicated in supporingt public education in Canada — the award recognizes outstanding contributions of principals in publicly funded schools, namely those who “demonstrate innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and who have done something truly remarkable in public education.”

The Learning Partnership calls Brewer “an agent of hope” at Twin Rivers, where his message to students is “we are not going to give up on you.” Brewer is responsible for Grade 8 to 12 education as well as continuing education involving 13 programs across nine sites.

“Trauma is a common occurrence given the realities experienced by TREC’s students. All receive naloxone training, drug and alcohol counselling, and sexual assault counselling is available three-and-a-half days a week.”

Brewer will receive his award at the end of February at a gala event in Toronto.

“I was truly honoured and humbled by the fact that a number of my colleagues put forth the nomination,” he says. “We work in an amazing district here and my colleagues are just fantastic so I get a lot of support throughout the district.”

SD73 Superintendent Alison Sidow said the award is entirely deserved as Brewer is “one of those rare individuals who serves his community with selfless commitment and unwavering courage.”

“Kent and his team care deeply about engaging with students and adults who have found life challenging both in and out of school. Under his leadership, countless students have been given an education that allows them to lead a life filled with hope.”
