Super Blue Blood Moon visible in Kamloops Wednesday morning

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE- Many people were up early this morning to try and catch the phenomenon of the blood moon and eclipse.

But cloud cover spoiled the view in much of our area. If you were watching before 5:00 AM, you probably got to see some of the moon, but just before 5:00 AM, cloud cover overshadowed the event.

Photographer and science guru Gordon Gore got a picture at 4:54 AM, close to full eclipse. You can see the shot abpve.

YESTERDAY: It’s a sight that occurs once in a lifetime. On Wednesday morning, celestial observers will (hopefully) be treated to a view of the Super Blue Blood Moon.

“The moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, so there are times when it’s a little bit closer to Earth,” Dr Joanne Rosvick, TRU Associate Professor in Physics explained. “Because of that, it’s going to appear a little bigger., The blue part just has to do with the fact it’s the second full moon in the same month… The blood moon part has to do with the fact that we’re going to be experiencing a total lunar eclipse tomorrow morning.”

Unlike last summers total solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse won’t be dangerous to view with the naked eye, but you will have to wake up pretty darn early to see this celestial event. The eclipse begins around 4:51 am and will finish around 7:00 am.

Dr Rosvick says if you are hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare sight, you won’t need any specialized equipment, but the weather could play a role in whether you get to see the uncommon event.

“The best way to see the eclipse is to go outside — preferably to a dark site, so you can have the best view — and just look up. Use a pair of binoculars if you want… Hopefully, it’s not cloudy.”
