Police dogs nab alleged Kamloops thief following midnight pursuit

KAMLOOPS — Update: Police have released more details into what they found in the trunk of the vehicle they allege was stolen by a 40 year old Kamloops man.

Staff Sgt. Doug Aird with the Kamloops Rural Detachment says an investigation has determined the tools found in the trunk had been stolen from a construction site on Shuswap Road on Jan. 12 and the four pieces of landscaping tools had been stolen during a break and enter of a business in the Tk’emlups Industrial area on Tuesday.

The suspect will be appearing in court this afternoon and faces three charges: possession of stolen property, three counts of breaching a recognizance of bail stemming from charges in the Lower Mainland – possession of a shotgun, crossbow and ammunition contrary to his firearms prohibition and obstructing a police officer.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the arrest was set in motion last night (Tuesday) around midnight.

“RCMP received a call from a motorist stating that a male in a car was stuck in the ditch on Highway 5 south of Kamloops,” she said. “The person reporting was concerned that the male was impaired.”

Shelkie says an officer attended the location and found that the man did indeed seem impaired, after which he gave the officer a false name before fleeing through the bush nearby.

“Police Dog Services were called to track the suspect. After an extensive track across the countryside, the suspect was located and arrested,” said Shelkie.

She says police found that the car the suspect had been driving was stolen in December and had numerous items in the trunk reported stolen from businesses this month.

Shelkie says the suspect is being held in custody for court and is known to police.

Charges are being considered at this time by the BC Prosecution Service. The man’s name has not been released.
