Kamloops’ 12th Annual ABC Family Literacy Day kicks off Saturday morning

KAMLOOPS — Literacy in the 21st century is more important than ever, and with the prevalence of technology, and the wide array of information available online, the ability to sift through it all has become a crucial skill for all segments of the population.

Saturday at the Henry Grube Centre, the Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative will host the 12th annual ABC Family Literacy Day, an event meant to help families enrich the lives of children through those foundational literacy skills, which will ultimately give them the skills to succeed in 21st-century life.

It’s a fun way to teach a very important set of skills. Saturday morning marks the 12th annual ABC Family Literacy Day, held at the Henry Grube Education Centre.

“[Literacy] is just everywhere. Every aspect of your life, from being able to drive your vehicle, do your baking, excel in school, all these things… so the importance of literacy is greater than it ever has been before,” Maureen Doll, coordinator of the Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative explained.

The event gives families a chance to hang out and spend the morning doing fun activities away from the screens that seem to dominate our modern lives.

“We need to be mindful of finding a balance between seen time and technology, and face-to-face, hands-on family time, together,” Doll said.

The event will have something for kids of all ages, and as always, will highlight the many different aspects of literacy for children and families. For Doll, the event is really all about seeing those families coming in and connecting with their favourite activities.

The event kicks off Saturday morning at 9:00 am at the Henry Grube Centre and will run until noon.
