TNRD waste management plan meeting

Kamloops — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is hosting a public meeting tonight to talk about garbage.

The meeting will introduce Kamloops residents to the recommendations of the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan. 

The proposal which is updated by the TNRD every ten years, serves as a guide to the handling of our garbage and recycling for the entire regional district.

City Streets and Envriomental Service Manager Glen Farrow says we’ve done a great job with residental waste and can now address problems elsewhere.

“Those main three focuses will be commercial recycling, demolition land clearing waste diversion, and then organic waste diversion,” said Farrow.

Farrow says they will also discuss the potential closure of the Barnhartvale Landfill. 

The Waste Management Plan is a requirement for the Ministry of Environment and TNRD reforms this plan every decade. 

According to the TNRD this year’s goal is to reduce waste consumption by twenty per cent.

“We exceeded the goal of last year’s plan which was thirty per cent and actually exceeded it by reducing waste to landfill by over sixty per cent,” said TNRD Enviromental Services Technologist Cassandra Enns.  “So twenty per cent, maybe we’ll just knock it out of the park again this year, or this plan.”

The meeting will take place at the Valley First Lounge in the Sandman Centre at 6 pm.
