Man charged with killing ex-girlfriend extradited to Canada to face murder charge

As a result, the documents say he was charged with assault and breaking and entering, and was barred from contacting Vasilije directly. His cellphone, though, allegedly shows that he continued to reach out to her.

A few weeks later, on the night of April 27, the two met at Vasilije’s home to discuss their breakup, the documents say. CCTV footage allegedly shows her walking him to his car around 1:45 a.m. The footage apparently shows that he followed her back inside and left again about 15 minutes later.

The documents say that when Vasilije’s roommate and a friend arrived home around 3 a.m., they found her lying on the floor in a pool of blood, with stab wounds to her throat and chest. There were two steak knives nearby.

According to the documents, Hasan texted Vasilije shortly after 3:30 a.m. saying: “Nice seeing you tonight glad we worked things out! You better have deleted that (expletive) dorche (sic) bag lol. Anyways see you soon.”

“Far from raising doubt as to Hasan’s actual involvement in the murder, this text message, when viewed against all of the other evidence, suggests Hasan was merely attempting to cover up his guilt,” said the Texas court processing the case.

The court said it’s clear that “Hasan was the man who was in the apartment that night.”

Several days later, a Reddit post written by someone purporting to be Hasan described the killing in detail, and characterized it as self-defence. Police have not confirmed whether or not he was in fact the author.

A Canada-wide warrant for his arrest was issued shortly after Vasilije’s death, but by that time he had already crossed into New York state, according to border records.

He remained in hiding in the U.S. until July, when he was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, by the United States Secret Service, who were conducting traffic stops as part of a counterfeit currency investigation.

Waterloo police say they worked collaboratively with American law enforcement officials to return Hasan to Canada through the extradition process.

He requested to be released on bail pending his extradition, but a San Antonio judge denied the request on the grounds that Hasan is “both a danger to the community and a serious flight risk.”

Hasan is to appear in court in Kitchener on Monday.
