City council honours Spina with moment of silence

KAMLOOPS — On the final regular meeting for city council before Christmas, Mayor Ken Christian took the opportunity to remember former colleague Marg Spina, who passed away from cancer last Friday.

“I would like to start our meeting with a moment of silence in reflection of Marg and reflection of all that she did around this horseshoe and all that she did for local government,” he said.

Spina spent nearly three full terms on council, first elected in 2008, and worked alongside many of the current city staff.

“She was an instrumental member of council and it’s a very sad thing that we’ve lost her,” said Councillor Arjun Singh. “So I think it’s fitting we’re doing a moment of silence for her today. I think we’ll remember her for a very long time in terms of the impact she had in the community. I think many of us who served with her want to try and continue on with the great work she was doing on so many different fronts.”

Singh worked with Spina for two terms and said her energy and passion will be missed.

“The energy was amazing and the innovation and the ideas. She was such a dynamo for all of us,” noted Singh. “To watch her operate in terms of the work she did, not only locally but regionally and provincially, she was a real idealist person. She acted on the ideas and really got things done. We’ll miss that energy around the table for sure.”

A public memorial will be held for Spina on January 20. A location has not been determined.
