Former Kamloops city councillor Marg Spina passes away

KAMLOOPS — A former Kamloops city councillor has passed away.

Marg Spina succumbed to cancer early this morning while surrounded by her family at hospice in Kamloops.

In a Facebook post this morning, the family thanked the doctors and staff at Royal Inland Hospital and Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House “for the wonderful care and support provided to her” and the family.

Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian said he was “saddened” to hear the news and called her a strong advocate for the less fortunate.

“Marg always represented seniors, persons with disability, and persons less fortunate with caring hands and an open heart.”

He added he has asked that all flags at civic buildings in Kamloops be lowered at noon today for 48 hours in her honour.

A public memorial service will be held in January.

Spina resigned her council seat last spring to concentrate on her battle with the disease. 

She was originally elected to Kamloops City Council in 2008.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of my Mom, Marg Spina after her courageous year long battle with cancer. She passed away at 4:00am surrounded by family at hospice in Kamloops. Our family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Royal Inland Hospital and Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House for the wonderful care and support they provided to her and our family. A public memorial service will be held in January.”
