KAMLOOPS — RCMP reacted quickly to put out a fire downtown early this morning that threatened a seniors complex.

Just after 12:30 this morning, an officer on patrol downtown spotted a fire behind the Bedford Manor at 529 Seymour Street.

The rear of the building was on fire near the rear exit.

Several members came to assist and between them, were able to use the fire extinguishers in their vehicles to contain things until Kamloops Fire and Rescue arrived to finish the job, and vent smoke from the building.

A number of residents had to be evacuated for a short time as a precaution.

Kamloops Fire and Rescue officials say the action by the officers kept the damage to the building to a minimum.

Police are still looking into the cause of the fire.
