City of Kamloops seeks public’s feedback on McArthur Island

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents wanting their say on the future use of the former McArthur Island Golf Course land are invited to participate in one of two open houses it plans to hold starting this weekend.

The first takes place at the Northills Shopping Centre near Interior Savings Credit Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, while a second open house takes place Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The purpose of the open houses is basically to have the public come out and share their ideas,” says Parks Operations and Planning Supervisor Michael Doll. “Ask any questions that they may have from staff and submit their visions for the park.”

He says he’s heard a variety of ideas on the topic already.

“I’ve heard everything from just leave it alone as it is and keep it naturalized up to building RV parks and having it more formalized. So, a whole gamut of things.”

Doll says the city takes all feedback “very seriously.”

“We’re keeping an open mind and being really impartial as to what the future use of that site is going to be, so we’re open to all suggestions at this point.”

Moving forward, he says once the open houses and surveys have been completed, staff will gather the input and look for trends.

“(We’ll) formulate a game plan and take it back to council to present to them and get their feedback.”

Doll expects that will happen sometime early next year.
