Overnight bush fire prompts campfire safety warning

KAMLOOPS — Those using a campfire to keep warm in the outdoors are being reminded to practice fire safety.

This comes after Kamloops Fire Rescue tended to a small grass fire on the outskirts of the Batchelor Heights area Friday night.

Assistant Chief Dave McMahon says the area known as the ‘party pit’ is a popular teen hangout adding this isn’t the first fire KFR has had to put out an out-of-control fire.

McMahon says the heavy winds hitting the city the last few days likely contributed to last night’s incident.

“Most likely the wind kicked up and took it into the sagebrush,” said McMahon. “Luckily it was fairly small and we were able to put it out quickly.”

He adds it’s critical people put out a fire completely before walking away.

“Make sure it’s a manageable size and definitely allow the fire to die down. Then put some dirt on it, rake it over and make sure it’s out before walking away.”
