TRU grad wins professional leadership award for women

KAMLOOPS — A major honour for a graduate of Thompson Rivers University.

Dawn McGrath, founder of MC2 Management Limited, was bestowed with the Professional Leadership Award for Women in Technology by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (ASTTBC) of BC in Vancouver Saturday night.

She is recognized as the highest certified First Nations female operator in BC on municipal systems for water and wastewater and is also a graduate of BCIT.

According to the ASTTBC, McGrath “successfully delivered the first Building Inspection program from BCIT to be delivered onsite within the Skeetchestn community and fostered significant improvements in the CMHC home inspection programs to First Nations communities on a national level.”

McGrath, who is from the Canim Lake band just east of 100 Mile House, garnered words of congratulations from Premier John Horgan and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde who said she’s brought “pride to First Nations in BC and across the country.”

She said she was honoured to receive the award and noted it was very meaningful, considering she grew up in a little cabin that didn’t have water, sewer servcies or electricity.

“For myself it’s been a recognition of life contributions I’ve made and signficant efforts to ensure that I maintain lifelong learning processes that can enhance and support our First Nations communities as we struggle and come through the development of the infrastructure, wastewater and water issues that are now prevalent and part of the national topic of concern.”
