Daily News parking lot set to open end of the month

KAMLOOPS — The parking lot being built on the former Daily News site is expected to open at the end of the month.

City of Kamloops Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says the project located at Seymour and 4th Avenue has taken longer than expected for a few reasons.

“Once we started prepping and doing grading for the parking lot we found a lot of issues buried below the surface. We actually pulled a radiator, as well a stove out of the the grade. There was a lot of buried big chunks of pieces of concrete. Once we started packing it, it created a lot of void so we had to pull material out and bring in proper material. We had the issue all over the parking lot.”

Crundwell says the discoveries weren’t surprising given the site’s long history.

He says the heavy snowfall earlier this month also slowed down the project but crews have made good progress since.

“We’re getting lucky with a good stretch of weather now so we’re hoping to have the parking lot paved tomorrow.”

He adds crews will spend next week building new sidewalks and curbs around the lot.

“There will be roadwork until about Wednesday when we’re hoping to have all the fencing down. It won’t be open to the public but it will look much different.”

Crundwell couldn’t provide a specific day on when the lot will open but says the public can expect December 1 at the latest.

The temporary parking lot will include approximately 140 stalls.
