KAMLOOPS — Operation Red Nose kicked off its 21st campaign in a festive fashion.
Ugly Christmas sweaters were the theme as the holiday designated driving program, which raises money for Pacific Sport Interior BC launched in Kamloops.
Volunteers drive party goers, and their cars home at the end of the night, ensuring everyone gets home safely.
It’s a program that has been well-used in Kamloops over the years.
Last year the city finished first in the province for rides provided.
“Out of 13 host communities, Kamloops provided the most rides, 1,241 rides,” said program coordinator Katie Klassen. “We do really well every year, and we keep growing, which is great to see. Kamloops is such a supportive community of campaigns and events like this.
“We get lots of volunteers, great support from our sponsors, and the community just really loves the service. It’s just that alternative ride home during the holiday season.”
This year Operation Red Nose has extended its service to provide rides on 18 nights between Nov. 24 and Dec. 31.
The added days will require some additional volunteers.
Cst. George Buttuls of the RCMP says he believes Operation Red Nose has saved lives.
“I think over the years that I’ve been involved in it I’d like to think that our impaired convictions and our impaired stops have actually dropped because of the program,” Buttuls said. “I do believe this program has been a wake-up call for a lot of people. Here’s an opportunity, the pubs promote it, and I think it does assist us in a big way in keeping those stats … down.”
