Utility rate, recycling options to be discussed at council Nov. 28

KAMLOOPS — While the city established a provisional tax increase of 1.93% on Tuesday, utility rates won’t be discussed for another two weeks at a Nov. 28 council meeting.

That’s also when the Director of Public Works and Utilities Jen Fretz will present to council a variety options about what to do with excess recycling revenues.

The city is still deciding how to allocate the $1.9 million gained from joining the Recycle BC program earlier this year. The City of Kamloops receives $1.1 million Recycle BC to collect recyclables, plus $800,000 in savings for processing the recycling, which is handled now by Recycle BC. Fretz noted on Tuesday her department has come up with a few options for the council to consider.

“Some of the options have been: keep it in a reserve and look at things like organic waste collection at the curb; we’ve also talked to council about the idea of opening another recycle depot; as well as collecting at the curbside soft plastics and glass,” said Fretz.
