RCMP nab suspect in weekend gun incident, search continues in Brock

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE: The Kamloops RCMP have arrested the man involved in an altercation with police at the Tournament Inn in Valleyview over the weekend.

Boyer, 41,  was wanted in connection to an altercation that took place Saturday night at the Tournament Inn in Valleyview.

Police allege Boyer produced a handgun, pointed it at the officer and made threats to shoot the officer. The officer then fired his pistol at the suspect.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says he was arrested without incident. No other information is available at this time.

“While it’s coincidental, it is not uncommon for this type of thing to happen,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. “It is uncommon for all of them to happen all at once.” 

Shelkie says there haven’t been many gun-related incidents in Kamloops over the past year, but recently gunfire has rung out in several neighbourhoods.

On Saturday police attended two separate incidents, the first at an apartment building on Holt Street. 

“There was an altercation between two men in an apartment and one of them carelessly discharged a firearm, a handgun at that time,” Shelkie said. “The bullet went through the wall into the neighbouring apartment and struck a male in that apartment.”

The 24-year-old man who was shot has since been released from hospital. A 45-year-old man and 41-year-old woman were taken into custody, but police are still seeking the man believed to have fired the gun. 

“All of the parties involved have been identified, and once we have our charges approved and a warrant outstanding for the male that was involved we will be releasing his name and identification, and at this time we’re still seeking him,” Shelkie said.

Kamloops RCMP are also seeking a suspect in a second incident from Saturday. 

An officer patrolling the area around the Tournament Inn located a group of suspicious people in the parking lot. 

When he approached them the situation took a dangerous turn. 

“He was speaking with an individual male, and attempted to detain him,” Shelkie said. “At that time a struggle ensued between this male and the officer and in the midst of the struggle the suspect pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the police officer and threatened to shoot him.”

The officer then fired shots towards the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Michael Boyer. 

“It is believed that the suspect did not fire any rounds at the police officer,” Shelkie said. “The police officer suffered an injury and went to the hospital, he was released shortly thereafter from the hospital and is doing fine.” 

Boyer is still at large, and RCMP consider him armed and dangerous.

“Our investigation right now we’re discussing locations that he’s been known to frequent in Kamloops, acquaintances of his in Kamloops, and so we’re asking anybody that sees him to please contact 911, don’t approach him, as he is armed and dangerous.”
