City crews shut off water main break

UPDATE: City crews have located the water main break on the north end of the Hillside Cemetary and shut off the water.

Fretz says a few funerals scheduled for this morning and afternoon at the cemetary have been cancelled  as crews remain on site investigating the cause of the water main break.

The area of Summit and McGill is expected to reopen by noon.

The incident happened at Summit and McGill Road next to the Landmark Centre building at around 6:30 a.m.

Water can be seen spewing onto Summit Drive as fire and city crews tend to the incident.

Jen Fretz, Director of Public Works and Utilities for the City of Kamloops, says the break is believed to located within the Hillside Cemetary off Notre Dame Drive.

She adds the weather isn’t helping the situation.

“With the snow conditions it’s makes things more challenging,” said Fretz. “We need to figure out exactly where the break is and then we can figure out which valve to shut off. At this point we don’t know what the impact will be when we do shut that water off, it’s hard to say who may or may not be affected with respect to water source.”

The Summit Drive and McGill Road intersection is closed for the time being.

Both streets are also closed westbound at Columbia Street. 

There’s no word on the cause or when the routes will reopen.
