KAMLOOPS — One regular season finished, another began.
Soccer wrapped up on the weekend with playoff implications for both teams — the TRU women looking to get in, the men for a possible home playoff game —- while the volleyball teams kicked off their 2017-18 Canada West season.
Playing above what many expected for a rebuilding program WolfPack women’s soccer took it right down to the final game of the season.
A 2-0 loss to the MacEwan Griffins officially eliminated the WolfPack from the playoff hunt.
Head coach Kelly Shantz called it “our best game of the year — even though the result doesn’t recognize that.”
A 3-9-2 record and a playoff push right to the end gives the WolfPack something to build on for the 2018 season.
Meanwhile, the men were hoping for a home playoff game —- but it never happened.
A 1-1 tie against UBC Okanagan left the WolfPack in third place in the Pacific Division.
They will now travel to Saskatoon to meet the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a quarter-final game on Friday.
Win or lose the Wolfpack will be in the U Sports nationals as the host team, November 9-12 at Hillside Stadium.
It was a great start to the season for the volleyball teams, as they played host to the MacEwan Griffins.
The WolfPack women won twice, 3-2 and 3-0 against the team from Edmonton.
The men kept it going with their own sweep of MacEwan, winning 3-1 and 3-1 — and in the first two games of the season matching their total number of wins from a year ago.
