Kamloops area farm offers plethora of pumpkin-related fun

As far as the eye can see, those varying-sized globes in every shade of orange you can imagine. According to the family who runs Sunset Valley Farms, it was a good year for the iconic squash.

“The pumpkins are so much better this year than they were last year,” Parm Uppal of Sunset Valley Farm explained. “We started the planting in May for harvest in October, and it’s been really good. We have about 13 different varieties out there, so lots to choose from.”

That bumper pumpkin crop has been a draw for the many locals who make pumpkin picking an annual tradition.

“This is my brother Maddox, he has the world’s smallest pumpkin, and I have a big pumpkin,” young pumpkin hunter Carter told CFJC News. “

Of course, when out in the crisp fall air surrounded by a multitude of gourds, the opportunities for photographs abound, according to photographers Mary and Macy.

“I just think all the fall colours, and like, it’s autumn, you have to take pictures of autumn,” Mary explained.

Macy added “It’s just fun. You see all these people gathering around, families and all that. They just come together and have a good time.”

Sunset Valley Farm offers a veritable cornucopia of autumnal activities, not limited to limitless pumpkins. The highlight of the season is their Halloween Corn Maze Extravaganza.

“That’s going to be [October] 27th, 28th, and 29th weekend,” Uppal said. “It starts at 7:00 pm, it’s going to be pitch black out here, we’re going to have the corn maze partially lit up, and we’ll have lots of people hiding and scaring, jumping out at you.”

The newest addition to the activities at the farm is the zip line; but if it’s just pumpkins you’re after, remember the golden rule for the pumpkin hunting brothers Carter and Maddox: you have to be able to carry your own pumpkin.
