Shane Doan announces his retirement

KAMLOOPS — In a letter to fans in Arizona Shane Doan has announced his retirement as a player.

Doan had spent his entire 21-season NHL career with the Coyotes organization.

Perhaps loyalty to a fault —– he was told in an unceremonious and short meeting in a restaurant in June with the teams young general manager, that he would’nt be offered a contract.

In an interview we did with Doan in July at the Blazers alumni golf tournament Doan admitted it was a tough pill to swallow, and he had to take time to come to grips with it.

The owner of the Coyotes later apologized for the way the organization handled telling Doan he was no longer wanted by the Coyotes as a player.

Doan, who is a part owner of the Kamloops Blazers, was at the teams training camp on Monday watching his 15-year old son.

Josh Doan was drafted by the Blazers in this springs Western Hockey League bantam draft.
