KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue crews rushed to douse a fire that sparked on the Tk’emlups Reserve this morning.

The grass fire was called in at about 11:50 a.m., in the 600-block of East Shuswap Road on the bank of the South Thompson River.

Platoon Captain David Ferguson says it appears to have been sparked by a mower working in the roadside brush.

“A road maintenance crew was doing some mowing at the side of the road, picked up some debris and it got flung into the grass and lit the grass on fire. Our crews responded quickly and were able to put it out.”

Traffic was cut off for a short time while firefighters doused the blaze.

“It was reported right away because the crews were on site,” said Ferguson.

“It just goes to show you how tinder dry the grass is, that a piece of debris like that can light a fire that easily.”
