Sterling scores Man City winner, sent off in frenzied finale
MANCHESTER, England — Raheem Sterling scored Manchester City’s winner deep into stoppage time at Bournemouth, sparking frenzied celebrations that saw him sent off.
While City avoided a second successive Premier League draw with the 2-1 victory on the south cost, the fallout from the wild conclusion could linger beyond Saturday’s final whistle.
Police officers intervened to hold back Benjamin Mendy and exchanged words with striker Sergio Aguero. Sterling had already been booked and was shown a second yellow card for apparently excessive celebrations following his looping deflected strike seven minutes into stoppage time.
“I would like someone to comment, if you cannot celebrate with the fans the best solution is not to invite the fans,” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “You can imagine how happy he is, how happy the fans are.”
