MORE SUPPORT ARRIVING IN BATTLE AGAINST B.C. WILDFIRES

Fifty firefighting experts from Australia are expected to arrive today to help with the wildfire battle in British Columbia. They’ll provide expertise in equipment, technology and logistical support. The Australians arrive as 155 wildfires burn across the province and more than 45,000 people are forced from their homes. Some residents, however, are returning home to Cache Creek, the first major community to be evacuated on July 7.

FEDERAL LIBERALS PUSHED TO REVEAL NAFTA STRATEGY

Conservatives and New Democrats are joining forces to pressure the Trudeau government to reveal its priorities for the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Four MPs from both parties have co-signed a letter seeking an emergency meeting to grill three cabinet ministers on Canada’s negotiating objectives and “expected positive outcomes” of the renegotiation, which is to begin in mid-August.

TOO FEW DOCTORS TREATING TOO MANY OPIOID ADDICTS: STUDY

A small number of Ontario doctors who treat people battling opioid addictions prescribe most of the medications used to treat the disorder, a study has found, raising concerns about the quality of patient care and access to therapy. Most of these physicians work in addiction treatment centres located in urban areas and see dozens of patients each day, say researchers, whose study was published today in the journal Drug & Alcohol Dependence.

KINDER MORGAN CANADA TO RELEASE EARNING REPORT TODAY

Kinder Morgan Canada will release its first earning report today since going public. The company is under pressure to detail its plans for the Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion. Analysts and investors will be looking for some clarity on the fate of the project, which has been thrust into question since John Horgan’s NDP in British Columbia took power with the help of the Greens, who oppose the $7.4-billion development.

ALLEGED YAHOO HACKER EXPECTED IN COURT TODAY

A Canadian man accused in a massive hack of Yahoo emails is expected to appear at a court hearing today in Hamilton. Karim Baratov was arrested March 14 under the Extradition Act after U.S. authorities indicted him and three others for computer hacking, economic espionage and other crimes. Baratov, 22, has been held without bail since his arrest after a judge ruled in April that he was too much of a flight risk to be released prior to an extradition hearing.
