B.C. Lions release kicker/punter Swayze Waters

VANCOUVER — The B.C. Lions released kicker/punter Swayze Waters on Wednesday.

Waters was signed to a one-year contract by the Lions in February, but was bothered by a quad injury most of training camp and didn’t see any action through the first three weeks of the 2017 CFL season.

Rookie Ty Long earned the kicking and punting duties out of camp and head coach/general manager Wally Buono chose to stick with him.

“Everybody loves football, but football doesn’t love everybody back,” Waters tweeted.

“Unfortunately, I was released today by the BC Lions. Thankful in times like these that the game doesn’t define me. I appreciate all the support from so many. ‘The heart of a man plans his way, but the lord establishes his steps’ #Jesus.”

Waters spent four seasons as a kicker and punter with the Toronto Argonauts before signing as a punter with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers in the 2016 off-season, but he was released in August. It was the fourth NFL team to cut him

The 30-year-old Jackson, Miss., native earned a Grey Cup ring with Toronto in 2012. He was also named the CFL’s top special teams player in 2014 when he averaged 47.7 yards per punt and connected on 47-of-52 field goals, but he missed most of the 2015 season with a hip injury.
