Canadian men’s volleyball squad will play for third place in FIVB World League

CURITIBA, Brazil — The Canadian men’s volleyball squad will play for third place in FIVB World League play after bowing out in the semifinals on Friday.

Canada was dropped in four sets by France. The French side took the match 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21.

“France was better than us,” said Canadian coach Stephane Antiga.

“They took advantage of their series of good serves and we were not as efficient with some of our elements that we usually handle better, such as high balls, and they blocked us too many times.”

Team captain John Gordon Perrin led the Canadians with 15 points while Sharone Vernon-Evans and Graham Vigrass contributed 14 points apiece.

France’s Earvin Ngapeth had a game-high 24 points, including four aces. 

Canada will play the United States for third on Friday. France will face host Brazil in the final.

“It was a good experience for the players, and we will prepare for the United States,” said Antiga. “We will be here tomorrow to fight again for the medal that we dream about.”
