KAMLOOPS — What better way to spend a hot summer day than learning rugby in the company of new friends.
The week long summer camp at McGowan Park Elementary is one of many Pacific Sport is hosting around the city where kids get to take part in a new sport each day.
“It’s for kids aged seven through 12” said Katie Klassen, Sport Participation Coordinator for Pacific Sport. “So far this week we’ve done rugby, ultimate frisby, floor ball, and SNAG golf. You want to keep kids active especially through the summer. You don’t want the kids staying home, being on electronics, it’s important to get them to move.”
Klassen says as of next week Pacific Sport is hosting camps at the Kamloops Tennis Club for kids ages seven through 14 to try their hand at lawnbowling, picketball and ultimate frisbee.
If staying cool is a priority this summer, the Big Little Science Centre is hosting daily science shows all summer long to help keep minds active through July and August.
“Todays show is static electricity,” said Susan Hammond, Assistant Operator for BLSC. “We’re using the Van de Graaff generator, which is a big ball where you put your hands on it and you get a charge going through you and your hair stands up. It’s a lot of fun for the kids.”
The main indoor centre where kids can try their hand at various gadgets and experiements is open Tuesday through Saturday with summer camps ranging from basic science to exploring coding and biology being held throughout the summer as well.
“They’re doing the science, they’re doing the experiments, they’re outside creating problems and solving them,” said Hammond. “From kindergarton up, we’ve got a lot of different camps.”
TRU, the Kamloops Public Library and the BC Wildlife Park are also hosting numerous camps and summer programs.
