Northwest Territories Mounties search for missing mushroom picker from Europe

YELLOWKNIFE — Mounties are searching for a missing mushroom picker visiting the Northwest Territories from the Czech Republic.

The woman was last seen near Reid Lake outside of Yellowknife on Monday afternoon and was reported missing from a group of mushroom pickers, who are helping in the search.

RCMP say an immediate air and ground search was activated utilizing volunteers in the area, Civil Air Search and Rescue Association and Yellowknife Search and Rescue.

On Thursday, a Transport Canada Dash 8 airplane equipped with infrared technology was brought in to aid in the effort.

RCMP spokeswoman Marie York-Condon says it’s a great tool “especially for searches such as these with a missing person in a vast and remote geographical area.”

Mounties said at the request of the missing woman’s family, no name will be released.

“RCMP respectfully request that those who are not involved with the search to please stay out of the area as it may interfere with the search efforts,” Mounties said in a news release.

They said when people go into remote areas of Canada’s north, it’s important they have a communication device such as a SAT phone; a GPS; and that they work in pairs.
